Talk shows like The Drew Barrymore Show are moving on without writers while the SAG strike continues.
The SAG strike is still going strong, with big stars such as Margot Robbie showing up at protests. It’s aiming to be one of the longest SAG strikes in a long time, going over 100 days. Recently, California approved giving unemployment benefits to SAG, which will help the strike go on even longer.
There is plenty of drama to come with this as well. A few talk shows are starting up again without their writers or crews that would be involved with the union. So, in other words, they are crossing the picket line. This has resulted in some pretty heavy backlash, as expected.
The Drew Barrymore Show is starting up again without its writers, and Drew Barrymore is getting some serious heat because of that. She got dropped as the National Book Awards host after announcing she was continuing with her show. Interestingly, Drew Barrymore had also dropped out of the MTV Movie Awards as their host earlier this year because of the strikes. Many have also come out on social media disagreeing with her choice. The show will be returning on September 18th, so we can expect some statement on her behalf then.
Bill Maher is also returning to his talk show, Real Time with Bill Maher. But Bill Maher has been more outspoken on the matter, stating it’s been long enough and it’s time to get back to work. I think that if we have waited this long, we might as well wait a little longer until the strike is over. If you cross the picket line now, it’ll create a pretty bad image for future employees in the SAG or Writers Union. At the very least, it’ll create more distance between the workers and the bosses.
