The Nun II is making great money. Will the Conjuring universe die out anytime soon?
The Nun II is looking at a $31.3 million weekend opening, a good amount for a horror movie sequel. The Nun II is a part of the Conjuring cinematic universe. The Conjuring came out in 2013 and spawned sequels and spin-offs. The Conjuring Universe is also the highest-grossing horror franchise. They made films with the Annabelle doll, The Conjuring characters, The Nun, and The Curse of La Llorna.
With the big opening weekend for The Nun II, it looks like it’ll surpass The Equalizer 3 at the box office. Time will tell with The Nun II’s continued success, as the first Nun film had the highest opening weekend of the series with $53.8 million and the highest worldwide gross with $365.5 million.
With The Conjuring seemingly going towards more spin-offs and sequels, it’ll be interesting to see if it will pay off. So far, each film has done well and not bombed yet. But, as we see with any movie series, there will be franchise fatigue at some point.
We have seen it with Disney in recent years with their Star Wars and Marvel projects. Disney had big plans for multiple Star Wars films to hit theaters but had to pull out once the numbers in their recent films sank. When it comes to horror film sequels, The Nun II shows enough effort for the series to keep going. So, for now, we will see more Conjuring Universe films.
But as time has shown us, there will always be one film that is less creative and has less effort put into it. Then, the series will slowly die off. Maybe they will take the Disney route and make some of these planned ideas into TV shows, not all movies. A Conjuring TV show is already in the works. Maybe there’s more to come.
