HBO has canned The Weeknd’s show, The Idol, after one season. But will it get a new audience over time?
The Idol was the talk of the town when it was coming out with weekly episodes on HBO. It has everyone talking, but not for the right reasons. The show was hit with horrible reviews. The first two episodes seemed to show promise but after a while, the show went off the rails real fast. Some of that can be attributed to one of the head creative minds of the show leaving during production and a new director being brought on.
The show was a mini-series of sorts with only five episodes. I thought the show had plenty of potential. Sometimes, it had these great moments but seemed to not land enough points to be a good show. The music the Weeknd would put out each week during the show’s run would be a nice surprise, and many could at least enjoy the music without the show.
When The Idol was written, it seemed to have an open ending for more stories to be told, but if it ended on its last episode in season one, it would be a good stopping point. But we will never know what would have come of this as HBO has canceled the show.
Now, what will become of it? The Idol will stay on the MAX streaming service, of course, for starters. So over time, some might either give it another chance or watch it for the first time without all the backlash it was facing at the time. People can just watch it with fresh eyes.
Shows or films like these that don’t do good at the time can over time gain a new audience. We might see people one day watch the show with a cult classic B-movie feel; giving into the trash factor, or people might just enjoy it as a casual watch one day.
The show has all the potential to be a cult-like project. We have a flawed show with a famous artist, The Weeknd. We also have one of the lowest-rated and hated HBO shows ever. If anything, it might be fun to watch it years later and see if it still deserves the hate it was given.
