Denzel Washington’s action sequel, The Equalizer 3, is number one at the box office.
The Equalizer 3 is showing more promise than any other entry in the series thus far. It has had the best opening weekend for any of the films in the series, and it could become the highest-grossing in the series in total. The Equalizer 3 is also sitting at a solid 94% approval rating from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes. It opened during the Labor Day weekend, which isn’t always the biggest box office weekend.
The Equalizer 3 has claimed the second-highest-grossing weekend in Labor Day history, bringing in $42 million. The record is held by Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, which had a $91 million opening during Labor Day weekend in 2021. The Equalizer 3 took Rob Zombies Halloween’s 2007 Labor Day Weekend’s second place spot.
The second Equalizer brought in $190 million, so we can expect Equalizer 3 to bring in a nice sum once all is said and done, even with the competition being stiff in the coming weeks. The box office will continue to heat up with The Nun II and Five Nights at Freddy’s coming out soon.
And let’s also not forget Taylor Swift’s concert film coming out soon, which is breaking presale records. It will be interesting to see how these films do without the public promotion of actors due to the ongoing SAG actors strike.
Still, with all of these new movies coming out, Barbie is sitting at number two at the domestic box office. Recently, Barbie has become the highest-grossing film of 2023, passing The Super Mario Bros. Movie for the number one spot with $1.36 billion. In total, this year’s had over $4 billion in ticket sales. A first since the pandemic, which we all know Barbie and Oppenheimer had a big hand in.
