The new Spielberg and Oprah-produced film, The Color Purple, made $18 million on Christmas Day.
The year isn’t over for movies breaking records, as The Color Purple is proving. Earlier this year, we saw Barbie and Oppenheimer break all kinds of records at the box office. And now, at the end of the year, we see The Color Purple become the second highest-grossing opening Christmas Day film. The number one spot is still held by Sherlock Holmes, which came out in 2009 and made 24 million on Christmas Day.
The Color Purple landed well in the box office weekend along with Wonka but Aquaman 2 holds the number one overall spot. The Color Purple is surpassing expectations, as its $18 million opening day gross was a surprise. The film is a musical based on a book of the same title that came out in 1982. Steven Spielberg made a film adaptation of the book in 1985, with Whoopi Goldberg starring in it. While the new film is not directed by Steven Spielberg, he produced it along with Oprah, amongst others.
The film is also doing well with critics. It is currently fresh, with 87% on Rotten Tomatoes. It’ll be interesting to see how the film does with the Oscar nominations, as it came out during the Oscar season.
This has been an interesting last few weeks as far as the box office is concerned. We’ve had multiple blockbuster films come out, like Wonka and Aquaman 2. We have biopics out, like Ferrari and the Iron Claw. We have musicals such as The Color Purple and Wonka. We also have animated films, such as The Boy And The Heron and Migration. Godzilla is also roaring in theaters.
Right now is as good a time as it is to go to your theater and check out one of these.
