Cult classic ‘Repo Man’ is getting a sequel with the Original Director and new lead.
The 1980’s cult classic, Repo Man, is getting a surprise in the form of a sequel with the original director. Originally released in 1984, Repo Man is a dark comedy about a young man who is recruited by an agency whose purpose is to repossess cars and is tasked to find a Chevy Malibu that is wanted for a bounty of 20,000 dollars, running along the lines of the car chasing genre.
In the years to follow since the film’s release, it has become a cult classic and Repo Man will now be getting a sequel titled, Repo Man 2: The Wages of Beer. This sequel will be directed by its original Repo Man director, Alex Cox. With the star actor, Kiowa Gordon, taking the role over from Emilio Estevez.
The filmmaker goes on to explain their hopes for the sequel stating “[we wish to] deliver an enthralling mix of punk energy, existential comedy, and unconventional storytelling, navigating the absurd and chaotic world of repo men into a new age of nuclear brinkmanship and driverless cars.”
It has been four decades since the release of the original movie, which makes this sequel come as a big surprise. The movie had trouble at the box office upon its initial release but received widespread acclaim at the time. In the forty years since its initial release, the film has become more beloved, and has achieved and maintained its status as a cult classic while being widely considered to be one of the best films to come out of the 1980s.
The cast of Repo Man is a major part of what gives it the iconic status that it holds in the current day and age, with Estevez playing the lead and the beloved actor, Harry Dean Stanton taking on the supporting role. Sadly, Stanton passed away in 2017, making his participation in the sequel movie impossible. Having lost a memorable member of the cast could make producing the sequels a bit harder as it tries to reinvent itself for the new generation watching the entertainment world.
