The Mean Girls musical film opened with $32 million over the weekend.
We have another queen at the box office, and it’s the Mean Girls musical. Many went and saw it due to the Martin Luther King Jr. Junior Holiday, in which Mean Girls opened with $32 million. We all remember the 2004 film, which became a cult classic over time. It was only a matter of time until they made a new version of the film, and this time it was a musical.
The film is about to make back its $36 million budget within its first two weeks. The film was also going to be a Paramount+ exclusive on their streaming service. But after test audiences loved the movie, the studio put it out on the big screen. Something that has become common over the last couple of years.
We didn’t know that Mean Girls was going to be a musical with the promotions for the film, which showed many aspects of the original film from 2004, which was not a musical. It seems this doesn’t bother viewers, as the reviews are still positive. The film has Tina Fay writing the screenplay and also returning to act in the film.
In other box office news, we have seen Wonka surpass $500,000,000 globally at the box office. Wonka currently sits in third place at the box office. Anyone but You, the new comedy film with Sydney Sweeney, has kept a decent run at the box office even though it’s been out a couple of weeks ago. It is currently in fourth place and got $8.5 million over the weekend.
With Mean Girls the top dog at the box office, it’ll be interesting to see how it does once it gets on streaming. Many will go on to buy Paramount+ just to watch it.
