Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny only brings in 80 million through its opening weekend and the 4th of July.
As the fifth entry in the Indiana Jones series, one can expect that the film wouldn’t be blowing up the box office. Even though the last Indiana Jones film, Kingdom of the Crystal Skull made 790 million worldwide in 2008, becoming the highest grossing film in the franchise and the second highest grossing film of that year. That film was the first Indiana Jones movie made since 1989. Many fans stay divided on that film to this day.
With Harrison Ford at 80 years old, this is the last Indiana Jones film for the star. With that being said, there will more than likely be a remake or reboot one day, so I hesitate to say this is the last Indiana Jones movie in general. With the film coming out a few days before the Fourth of July, it’s safe to say they thought this would help bring in viewers with many people taking off work for the Fourth of July holiday in America, to see an American classic character.
Making around 80 million through the weekend and the Fourth of July for a forty some year old film series is good, but not possibly what Disney had in mind since it is one of the most expensive movies Disney and Lucasfilm have made with almost 300 million. Only time will tell if it will make more money or stay stagnate. With bigger films like Barbie and Mission Impossible 7 coming out soon, it’s not looking so good.
What’s making this Indiana Jones film not whip the box office around? Sometimes these things can never be explained when it comes to whether a movie can be a box office smash. One thing for me I can say is that the run time is a big turn-off. At 2 hours and 34 minutes, it’s the longest Indiana Jones movie yet. With people already having a hard enough time going out to the movies, having a long commitment like that is hard to win over with audiences. Maybe save the longer cut for the home video or streaming as a Directors or extended cut.
