The new summer racing film by Sony, Gran Turismo, beats Barbie and more at the box office.
The Summer is slowly coming to a close, so that will mean fewer big blockbusters like Gran Turismo. This summer has been a doozy as well being one of the largest box office summers in years with giants such as Barbie and Oppenheimer. Gran Turismo hopes to add to those big blockbuster numbers.
Right now, Gran Turismo has beaten Barbie for the number one spot at the weekend box office. This is the second week in a row Barbie has fallen short of having that number one spot after Blue Beetle beat it last week. Gran Turismo has opened with a somewhat decent $17.3 million domestic box office. The film is based on a popular video game of the same name. But the solid reviews from audiences might give it a jump in weeks to come.
Gran Turismo has a decent starring cast, being led by Orlando Bloom and David Harbour. But I believe this film and many others would have had a bigger opening if the actors had been able to promote their films. For those who don’t pay attention to the news, the SAG is on strike and actors cannot promote their work. This strike has been going on for months and seems to not be stopping anytime soon.
With these promotions, whether it be late-night talk shows, press junkets, or morning news interviews, it seems that these always boost sales. At least for me when a big actor or actress goes on a talk show or interview I will see clips of it on my YouTube and social media feed all week. Many people will see this and then find out this actor or actress they follow is in a new movie, then go see it, and it’s as simple as that.
