Taking the world by storm, Takashi Yamasaki’s Godzilla Minus One takes home the best VFX at the Oscars.
Godzilla, an iconic creature feature that has been around since 1954 when it appeared on screen for the first time. This Japanese film was directed by Ishirō Honda, the baseline of this story is set when an enormous sea monster is awoken by nuclear radiation, the movie concept has been featured in over thirty different films, making Godzilla the longest running film franchise in history.
Following the latest entry to the film’s history and settings, Director Takashi Yamazaki’s Godzilla Minus One follows up its immense success at the Japanese Academy Awards event. With another marvelous upset victory at the Academy Awards in Los Angeles, taking home the Oscar for best for Best Visual Effects. Directed by Takashi Yamazaki, the breathtakingly incredible scenes of destruction, while being on a tiny budget says alot about the determination and effort that went into the films making.
Combining these factors with the devastating exploration of post-traumatic stress in a postwar Japan, still reeling from the fallout both physically and psychologically of Nagasaki and Hiroshima, it made for a compelling piece of movie making.
With these factors in mind, it’s still a pretty impressive take on this movie, particularly noticed in Toho’, Godzilla movie series, which involves putting Godzilla against another giant creature, more casting the character in a heroic light compared to the depiction in Minus One. Being unlike the typical monster movie, Minus One is mostly centered around the characters’ drama which is the driving point of the film.
Godzilla Minus One, in the wake of its awesome box office return, became the most financially successful Japanese live-action movie in U.S. history. On top of that achievement, it stands as the highest grossing foreign film in the U.S. since the pandemic happened and the most successful international movie in the U.S. for over the last 24 years. In the end, the movie has made quite the breakthrough by taking home achievements that won’t soon be forgotten by fans.
