Godzilla Minus One has become the highest-grossing Japanese live-action film in North America.
Godzilla Minus One is the new Japanese-made Godzilla film. It is the first one they made since Shin Godzilla, which came out in 2014. And before that, they hadn’t done one since Godzilla: Final Wars, which came out in 2004. So Godzilla films from Japan don’t come out as much as they used to back in the 60s and 70s.
Godzilla minus one is literally breathing new life into the franchise and Japanese films. The film itself has a budget of around $15 million, and as of now in North America, it has made $15.7 million so far in its opening weeks. Also, it became the biggest debut for foreign films this year and the highest-grossing Japanese live-action film in North America.
Godzilla Minus One will more than likely get into the top three of the box office this past weekend. Going against Beyoncé’s concert film and The new Hunger Games is very impressive for a film not made in America. Not only that, but the film currently has a 97% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, making it the highest-rated blockbuster film on their site this year, beating Oppenheimer. With this being said, it’s one of the highest-rated Godzilla films ever, and people regard it as one of the best ones made since the original, or even the best one ever made.
Taking this into account, there might be a couple of things we can learn from this. Sometimes, the higher the budget, doesn’t always mean it’s going to make more money. This film had basically all odds against it being lower budget and not made in America, and right now it’s already made what its initial budget was, so it will be a definite success over time.
