After weeks of being number one at the box office, Blue Beetle has taken down Barbie for the top spot.
Blue Beetle is the new superhero movie and the first DC superhero film we have seen since The Flash. Blue Beetle could bring in some decent numbers for a superhero not widely known. But the competition is stiff with box office beasts like Barbie and Oppenheimer.
The weekend sales for Blue Beetle came to a decent $25.4 million opening. The first film to hold the number one spot besides Barbie in a month. But with this being said, Barbie is still doing good numbers. This past week it was confirmed that Barbie was the highest-grossing Warner Bros release ever domestically and still bringing in millions every week. It is currently at $567.3 million in North America and $1.28 billion globally.
Blue Beetle was planned to be a streaming-only film, but Warner Bros figured this film needed to be in theaters this year. One of the main reasons is that it’s the first DC film to star a Latino superhero. Its budget was $105 million, which is fairly low for a superhero film in the modern age. It also sits well with its reviews, being fresh on Rotten Tomatoes.
All box office runs come to an end, and Barbie is no stranger to that fact. With that being said, this coming Sunday is national cinemas day. Many theaters are having showings for only four dollars. This will more than likely be a big box office day, and no doubt films that have been out a while, like Barbie and Oppenheimer, will do well, getting those late to the party a chance to see the films.
This competition is great to have at the box office, and we haven’t had so many high-grossing films playing in theatres at the same time in years. With the new Blue Beetle superhero film, it seems just about every kind of movie is now in theatres, and there is no better time than now to see a movie.
