A movie about a Barbie girl and a movie about a nuke are coming out on the same day.
On July 21st, 2023, both Barbie and Oppenheimer are coming to theaters. The Barbie film comes as a bright kid friendly movie that stars Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling. Barbie tells a Truman show like tale of Barbie being stuck in her Barbie world. That same day, Christopher Nolan’s next epic, Oppenheimer, comes out. Oppenheimer stars Cillian Murphy and Emily Blunt and it is the story of how the nuke was made.
Those two both could not be any different on paper. One will more than likely be a hard to watch film on the destruction of the nuke and the scary side of science, while the other is a bright happy go lucky movie that will have moviegoers happy and laughing. But something about seeing both in one day as an unlikely double feature seems hilarious and fun.
This strange same date release for two massive summer blockbusters has had people making memes online and drawing to how fun it would be to see both films on the same day. It has gotten to the point where celebrities are coming out supporting this idea. Tom Cruise has come out supporting this and encouraging fans to see both. Tom Cruise has become the box office savior after Top Gun 2 saved theaters after covid nearly destroyed them all.
Even Margot Robbie has posed with a ticket in front of the Oppenheimer poster, showing how she will support both films and watch them the same night. This has spawned other actors and directors doing the same, encouraging fans to do the same.
In today’s day and age, we need all the help we can get when it comes to going to a theatre. The classic experience of going to the movies is something I and other movie lovers hope will never die. This double feature idea might just be a fun enough experience to keep your local theatre afloat this summer. It could also prove to be a fun first date.
