Both Barbie and Oppenheimer didn’t bomb, but made records for post pandemic box office.
Barbie and Oppenheimer or “Barbenimer” have been the talk of the town in the movie world for months now. Both came out the same day, which led to the double feature joke that was all over the Internet. This kind of talk about upcoming movies seemed to be something we haven’t heard about in years and it is quite refreshing!
We now have more motivation to go see films in theaters again. Let alone just the gag of seeing both these films on the same day seems like a unique experience. Many did end up buying tickets for the double feature, seeing both on the same day. The hype was so large for this that we saw record numbers for pre-sale tickets in the post pandemic world.
The weekend box office had the biggest revenue seen since 2019. Many theaters were even sold out on the presale’s for both films. This past weekend following Barbie and Oppenheimer’s opening, we saw more people in theaters than the “Spider-Man: No Way Home” opening weekend. This past weekend was the largest ticket sales we have seen since “Avengers: Endgame” in 2019.
The opening weekend for Barbie and Oppenheimer is looking at a solid 300 Million at the box office. Also, the director for Barbie, Greta Gerwig made history as well by now holding the title of the largest opening weekend for a female director. Just passing “Caption Marvel” which was co-directed by Anna Boden.
With this being said, the age old tradition of going to theaters could be looking at a solid comeback. We saw great numbers with the new Mission Impossible and “Sound of Freedom” as well, which are all playing in theaters currently. This in turn helped with the large box office weekend. This might just give Hollywood the bolt of energy to begin making more films made for the experience of going to theaters.
