Matthew Vaughn and Apple’s new film, Argylle, opened with only $18 million in the US over the weekend.
The star-studded cast of Argylle couldn’t save it from its box-office bomb. Argylle is taking a hit with critics and the box office currently. It is on par to become the biggest bomb for Apple’s theatrical films. We have seen Apple put films in theaters and then on their streaming app, such as Napoleon and Killers of the Flower Moon. Both of those films did okay at the box office, considering their length and the kinds of movies they were.
Argylle had all of the reasons to do well at the box office. You have a director with a decent track record and a massive star-studded cast. You have Sam Rockwell, Bryce Dallas Howard, Bryan Cranston, Henry Cavill, and even the singer Dua Lipa, just to name a few. But it seems that this couldn’t help Argyllein in the long run.
The film could get a cult following as time goes on with it being on a streaming app. But as of now, it’s not doing well with critics or at the box office. Especially with it being such a high-budget film. Many critics complain that Argylle has lackluster CGI and a very typical story.
The movie is looking at an opening of $18 million, with the budget being around $200 or $250 million. It seems the film did better overseas, with $17.3 million. But it did end up winning the box office this weekend. How long it’ll stay is a hard question, as big films like Madame Webb are coming soon.
In other news at the box office, Wonka has crossed the $200 million mark domestically. It seems that Wonka has a place to stay at the box office. We have also seen Mean Girls cross $90 million at the box office.
