A list of the top 10 best films of the stacked year of 2024.
2024 is officially over. It was a great year for film, especially the horror genre. 2024 was also a year of surprise films, ones that I didn’t see being as good as they would be. Let’s take a look at my top 10 films of 2024.
10. Monkey Man
With a title like Monkey Man, you expect something silly. But what we got instead was a great action film inspired by John Wick. I went into it thinking it wasn’t going to be a copy of John Wick. But I thoroughly enjoyed it, and I think it’s a pretty great action movie to watch.
Monkey Man has a pretty good story in it, which always helps in action films of this caliber. It also stuck the landing, which is important for a lot of these kinds of films. Like John Wick, it had a lot of great choreography in its action scenes; it was a spectacle to see.
9. Immaculate
Immaculate was a classic return to form simple horror film. The plot was very easy to follow. Sydney Sweeney‘s performance was good for her first proper leading lady horror film. The film isn’t too hard to follow, and it was relatively short as well, which helped a ton in my eyes.
The film was entertaining and had some great scares and some great set design. The music was pretty great as well, which always helps in horror films. While this one isn’t necessarily reinventing the wheel. It’s a good watch to see Sydney Sweeney in a horror film like this. I hope she does more.
8. Abigail
Abigail was a sleeper hit for me. I didn’t really know what to expect going into it, as I only knew a couple of the cast members. I hadn’t seen the director’s previous work, but after this, I was definitely motivated to do so. This film was fun and funny, and it also had some great horror elements. Besides Nosferatu, this has the best new approach to vampire films.
I enjoy the comedy elements, as sometimes horror and comedy. Sometimes, those two don’t mix well, but this film did a great job of doing so. It’s a great horror film on its own, and its comedy elements are great on their own as well.
7. Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire
Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire is simply the best Godzilla film made in America. After a couple of Godzilla and King Kong films being made here in America, it seems that they have finally understood how to make a great monster movie. The film has more interactions with the monsters than the humans, which is something we all want.
When we do see the action, it’s incredible and extremely entertaining to watch. The film wasn’t as long as some of the predecessors, and this was a plus. We got straight to the point and had great, entertaining action in a summer blockbuster. For Godzilla fans, it’s finally time to rejoice as the Americans have finally understood how to make an awesome Godzilla film.
6. Spaceman
Spaceman is a film that I think I’m the only person who enjoyed. It was a Netflix sci-fi drama that starred Adam Sandler in a serious role. After Uncut Gems, I was pleased to see that Adam Sandler did great serious roles as well. So I gave this film a chance, and I was blown away by how great he did, how incredible the music was, and how great the story was.
It was a story I didn’t understand at first, but the more I thought about it, the more it got to me. It has great emotion, and even though it might not always hit when it needs to, it’s still a really good movie and leaves you with a very thought-provoking ending. I always like to praise movies that leave you thinking and with something to go home with. Spaceman is one of those.
5. Dune: Part Two
Dune: Part Two capitalizes on the setting up of the first film. We have another great score by Hans Zimmer and another great film by Denis Villeneuve. The Dune world has expanded onto a new TV show on HBO after the film’s success.
I think Dune: Part Two also captures Timothée Chalamet at his best since the film Call Me by Your Name. Zendaya also does a great job in this film. This is a truly great, big-budget action sci-fi film. It has some incredible action scenes that are well-filmed and serve the story well, which is needed for a great action film.
4. Nosferatu
Nosferatu is definitely the best horror film of the year. Robert Eggers proves that he can make a masterpiece after masterpiece when it comes to the horror genre. This is an epic retelling of the 20s classic silent film. The film has an incredible set design, acting, and a great story.
I think this is a film that we talked about for a while, and I look forward to its physical release. Many will go on to praise Lily-Rose Depp’s performance in the film, as she did an incredible job in the star-studded film. Even for the average moviegoer, this is a great experience, not just for horror fans.
3. Sonic the Hedgehog 3
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 was an incredible surprise. I loved the first two and was surprised that the third film in a series could be the best. This is extremely rare, especially in massive films like these. However, with the Sonic universe, there are so many characters, and it seems that this film series has done such a good job with them. This film gave us more time with the Sonic characters than the human characters created just for the films.
We also had an insane Keanu Reeves performance as Shadow of the Hedgehog, who is my favorite character in the Sonic franchise. Shadow is probably the most popular character in the Sonic universe besides Sonic himself. So they knew how hard it was going to be to execute Shadow’s character right, and they did just a perfect job. It’s also a great film to watch with anyone. You can watch it with kids or adults and still get something out of it.
2. Challengers
This is the movie that has grown on me over time. I thoroughly enjoyed it when I first watched it, but it’s one that I’ve continued to have positive thoughts towards. I believe that what the film did with its editing style and music is something I constantly think about when thinking of these kinds of movies.
Challengers is about tennis players, and the fact that I enjoy this movie so much and know nothing about tennis is a great testament to it. It has the year’s soundtrack for me, which helps it win me over. While it has its negatives, the positives are overwhelming, and this is a movie that I will continue to watch for years to come. The score is a shoo-in for the Golden Globes and Oscars for best score of the year.
1. Anora
Anora is my top film of the year. It does things that big Hollywood films could never dream of actually doing. Having characters written so well and having such great depth to them is something you very rarely see. This is a special film that leaves you with profound emotion.
Anora is a film that makes you think for a while. This is the breakout hit of the year for many others. It is also the lowest-budget film on my list but my favorite film of the year. This proves that big-budget movies don’t necessarily mean they’re better than lower-budget films. A film everyone should try to see.
