With the addition of Ustwo and Devolver, Netflix will be able to increase its collection of video games.
Netflix, the world’s most popular streaming service, plans to add around 50 new video games to its library by the end of 2022, many of which will come from well-known studios and creators.
During its Geeked Week event, Netflix Games unveiled a list of new and upcoming releases, including several based on famous TV shows like La Casa de Papel (a.k.a. Money Heist) and The Queen’s Gambit.
With the addition of these new games: Shadow and Bone Destinies, an RPG based on the fantasy television series; Too Hot To Handle, a mobile game about a dating show; The Queen’s Gambit Chess, a strategic puzzler based on the Netflix miniseries; and Lucky Luna, a platformer based on Japanese folklore by Snowman.
Additionally, Monument Valley developer Ustwo has announced a new project called Desta: The Memories Between, which is described as a doodgeball-inspired turn-based strategy game; publisher Devolver Digital has announced Terra Nil, a city-building strategy game focused on climate change; and the creators of Downwell have announced Poinpy, a vibrant virtual climber. A smattering of games was available when the nascent site first went live in November 2021, and more games, such as Spiritfarer will be added to it in the near future.
Since then, the company has acquired Next Games and Boss Fight Entertainment, two well-known in-house production companies. Night School Studio, the creator of Oxenfree, was also bought by the firm in September of last year.
Netflix CEO Reed Hastings said earlier this year that the business aspires to win “some very substantial advantages” in the video game sector by building up its expertise and creative capabilities.
