The new indie horror Content Warning might just be the spooky experience you were looking for.
Content Warning is a brand-new co-op horror game that was released on April 1st, 2024. It is available on Steam, but there is no confirmation that it will be released for Xbox or PS5. In its first 24 hours, the game was free to download for all Steam users, and it accumulated over 6.2 million players worldwide and became an overnight success!
The aim of the game is to journey to the Old World with your friends and try to capture footage of spooky entities, relics, and artifacts with your video recorder. Upload this footage to Spooktube and earn revenue to purchase in-game items such as emotes!
You will first spawn in a house that looks like something from a children’s cartoon that is surrounded by blue sky and a field of grass in Content Warning. There is also a character customization feature that lets you edit your character! The ASCII Face Customization Terminal allows players to change the color of their faces and use any characters they want to create their persona. You can be as serious or as goofy as you like.
Once you have finished playing with the ASCII, it’s time to gather your friends and head to the Old World. This is when Content Warning starts to get spooky. Explore dark areas and work together to find monsters and weird items that may or may not be cursed. Your party is content creators, so don’t forget to film anything you find. Remember, the more spookiness you record, the more views you will get, which means you’ll earn more revenue! But be careful, you have limited oxygen, and you can be killed by entities.
Some entities you can come across include sentry turret dogs, ghosts with knives, walking blenders, weeping angel trap monsters and more. Each entity has its own mechanic, some are more lethal than others depending on the situation. For example, the Knife Ghost is like the Tonberry from Final Fantasy – it stalks its prey and delivers a lethal stab wound if you are caught. Meanwhile, the Iron Maiden is a trap monster that captures someone in your party, and you must enter a “captcha-like” code to successfully release your friend from its cage.
Explore as much or as little as you wish, then return to your house and upload your footage to Spooktube (the game’s version of YouTube). Whatever cash you earn from your footage can be spent at the kiosk machine found outside of your home. Similarly to Phasmaphobia, you can buy equipment like flashlights, healing items, emotes and more!
